Deck It Shares Winter Preparation Guidance to Help Stow, MA Property Owners Protect Their Decks Before New England Weather Arrives
Stow, MA — Deck It, a deck building specialist with over 500 decks completed across the region, is releasing practical guidance to help Stow, MA property owners prepare their outdoor structures for the conditions New England winters consistently deliver. Snow loads, ice accumulation, freeze-thaw cycles, and weeks of sustained cold all pose real threats to unprepared decks, and the steps that prevent the most damage are also the most straightforward to take before winter arrives.

Start With a Thorough Inspection
A careful walk-through assessment is the most important first step any property owner can take before winter conditions set in. Winter turns small existing problems into larger ones, and identifying vulnerabilities early gives property owners the opportunity to address them before cold weather amplifies their impact.
The decking surface should be checked for boards that have cracked, cupped, or pulled away from the framing below. Railing posts and connections should be examined for looseness or corrosion at the hardware. The ledger board where the deck meets the house should be inspected for gaps in the flashing or signs of moisture damage. Post bases and any visible framing should be assessed for early signs of rot or structural compromise. Deck It offers professional inspections for property owners who want expert evaluation of their structure, backed by a 1-year labor warranty and material warranties of up to 50 years on completed builds.
Clear Debris Before the First Hard Freeze
Leaves, dirt, and organic debris that settle on and between deck boards through fall hold moisture against the surface through the winter months. That persistent moisture accelerates deterioration in wood decking and creates conditions for mold and mildew growth on composite surfaces. Clearing all debris from the deck surface and sweeping carefully between board gaps before the first hard freeze removes a significant source of preventable winter moisture damage in a single step. For wood decks, applying a quality sealant before winter provides a stronger barrier against the moisture that snow and ice deliver consistently through a Massachusetts winter.
Move Everything Off the Deck Surface
Outdoor furniture, planters, rugs, and accessories left on the deck through winter create moisture and damage problems that are entirely avoidable. Furniture traps moisture against the deck surface, restricts drainage, and can scratch or stain decking material as it shifts under wind or snow weight. Planters hold water that freezes and can crack both the planter itself and the boards beneath it. Moving everything off the deck and storing furniture in a covered space eliminates several sources of preventable surface damage before they have a chance to develop.
Snow Removal Technique Matters as Much as the Removal Itself
Heavy snow accumulation places significant structural weight on a deck, but aggressive removal with the wrong tools causes its own category of damage. A plastic shovel blade rather than metal should always be used when clearing snow from a deck surface. Metal edges scratch and gouge both wood and composite decking, and those surface marks create pathways for moisture penetration through the rest of winter. Snow should be pushed off the deck rather than lifted and thrown across the surface. Rock salt and calcium chloride ice melt products should be avoided on deck surfaces as they are corrosive to hardware and damaging to most decking materials. Sand or a deck-safe ice melt product is the appropriate choice for Stow, MA conditions.
Winter Prep Done Right Extends the Life of the Entire Structure
The goal of winter preparation is not simply surviving one more season but making choices that extend the long-term performance of the deck as a whole. For property owners considering upgrades or replacements, Deck It offers 3D design services so a better-suited structure can be planned before any commitment to construction is made. Financing is available for qualifying projects, making it practical to invest in the right solution rather than continuing to patch an aging structure year after year.

I am so happy with the results and cannot say enough good things about my experience with Deck It! From start to finish, the entire process was both professional and seamless. The team really exceeded my expectations: Evan M., my salesperson, was incredibly patient and kind. He walked me through the different materials in the showroom to ensure I was making a decision I would be happy with. Tom F., the project manager, was knowledgeable and efficient. He made sure the project stayed on track and that all of my needs were met throughout the process. Drew, the lead contractor, did an amazing job with an incredible attention to detail. I would highly recommend Deck It for any deck building project!Posted on David BlumenstockTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I highly recommend Deck-It! They were very professional and competent throughout the entire process. Our deck was completed on time and on budget. The crew arrived before 7AM and worked straight thru until 7PM or even later. We removed an old stair platform and replaced it with a new deck. The old stairs had two step stringers. The new stairs have six stringers with the outer two on either side blocked together. If you need a deck built and want it done well with no stress hire Deck-It. Thank you to everyone who worked on our deck project.Posted on Reynaldo LeBlancTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Deck It team was truly 5-star from start to finish. Responsive, respectful, hardworking, and incredibly thorough throughout the entire process. I especially appreciated the transparency and communication at every step — we always knew what to expect and felt confident in the work being done. My journey with Deck It actually started a few years ago when I first began exploring the project with George. He was gracious, thoughtful, and patient from day one, which made a lasting impression. From design through completion, I had the pleasure of working with Glen, Tom (PM), Gage, and Chauncey, and every member of the team demonstrated professionalism and pride in their work. What truly sets Deck It apart is the craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. The quality of the finished deck speaks for itself, but what impressed me even more was the care and precision they brought to every phase of the project. Their process, execution, and commitment to excellence were second to none. I would absolutely recommend Deck It to anyone looking for a high-quality deck and a genuinely positive experience from beginning to end.Posted on Vlad GoldenbergTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We hired Deck It in the fall of 2025 to build a somewhat atypical deck on our house. This company is definitely the best in the business, and I would not hesitate to hire them again. The transition from estimation, to design, to project management was fairly smooth. I dealt with Matthew, Glenn, Brandon, and Alyssa through the estimate, project, closeout, and even a minor concern after, and each one was very responsive and a pleasure to work with. Our particular project involved two existing sliding doors that connected via the deck and a structural roof support. After the deck was complete, they ended up replacing a soffit near the roof support that honestly looks better than it did prior to the project. Aside from that, the project execution was right on schedule and their crews actually worked over the weekend during the fall before a cold rainy period just so they could maintain schedule. A minor issue during construction was the dumpster subcontractor damaged an electrical outlet when pulling out the dumpster - and Deck it took responsibility and fixed it - well done! Finally, I want to say that this is a project that we wanted to do for several years and Deck It, while maybe not the least expensive, was able to work with us to design the size of deck we wanted for a reasonable price. One final plus - we had a minor issue with the railing in the spring and upon contacting them, they came out and addressed it within a couple of weeks while staying in communication. Overall - these folks really are the best in the business and I am very pleased with the work and service. Would certainly use them again and recommend them to anybody!Posted on Amanda GrazioliTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. When we bought our home, we fell in love with our backyard. It has since become one of our favorite parts of our property, but there was something keeping us from enjoying it to it's fullest: the tiny, splintering wooden deck. After living with this challenge for a decade, we called DeckIt and we're so glad we did. From the first outreach George was prompt and responsive. He arrived on-time for our estimate appointment and gave us a clear and fair estimate for our project. We appreciated that DeckIt has an architect on staff who drew up plans for our new, expanded deck and enjoyed visiting the showroom to make final selections about decking materials and colors. Our project manager Brandon and his team were courteous and hardworking. When a problem arose with the build, Brandon, George, and Glenn went above-and-beyond to resolve things and ensure we were satisfied with the solution. They handled every step of our deck build with professionalism and did phenomenal work. We love our newly expanded Timber Tech deck and can't wait to enjoy it now that the weather is warming up.
